I had taken our newborn twins to surprise my husband at the port — before discovering the secret he was hiding from me.
I had been exploring another city with our three-month-old twin daughters, hoping to surprise my husband when his ship arrived. Instead, I saw him step off the boat, his arm around another woman. Before I could even say her name, he kissed her.
When I confronted him, he showed no remorse. Then I noticed his father behind him.
« Ryan, there’s someone you should see, » I said. « Look to your right. »
I thought my father-in-law was finally going to defend me. But his next words revealed something even more disturbing than my husband’s betrayal. It was then that I understood that if I wanted a different future for my daughters, I would have to build it myself.
I adjusted Ava’s little pink hat for the third time, while her twin sister, Mia, slept peacefully in the stroller.
The cruise terminal was crowded with families waiting for their loved ones to return. Every time the doors opened, my heart raced.
My husband, Ryan, had left for a new mission when I was seven months pregnant. He missed the birth, the exhausting first few weeks, and countless sleepless nights.
Our daughters were already three months old, and he had never held a single one of them in his arms.
We had originally planned to meet at home, but I couldn’t bear to wait any longer.
With my stepfather, Gerald, who was helping me with the luggage and the babies, I had travelled to the port city to surprise Ryan.
I imagined him dropping his suitcase, taking our daughters in his arms and finally becoming the father he had promised to be.
During his months at sea, he called whenever the ship’s connection allowed.
« Once you get back home, darling, things will be different, » he always promised.
I believed him.
The terminal doors opened and
Ryan appeared, carrying his bag, laughing with a beautiful woman by his side. His pink suitcase rolled behind them as they walked forward.
His arm rested comfortably around her waist.
And then he kissed her.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
« Ryan? »
He turned towards me.
His expression changed from surprise to annoyance.
« Claire? What are you doing here? »
I looked from him to the woman.
« I brought our daughters. I thought you might like to meet them. »
The woman glanced at the stroller and gave a small, embarrassed laugh.
« Well, that’s certainly unexpected. »
I stared at Ryan.
» Who is it ? «
He sighed.
« Someone I met on the cruise. It wasn’t anything serious. »
« You’re not serious? You were just kissing her! »
« Claire, don’t make a scene. »
The woman shrugged.
« It was without obligation. Nothing more. »
Ryan spoke as if he were explaining something perfectly reasonable.
« You have to understand. I’m a young man who spends months away from home. Things happen. »
« Are things happening? » I repeated.
« Look, men have needs. She’s not the first woman I’ve spent time with while working, and she probably won’t be the last. »
My chest tightened.
I had spent months taking care of two newborns, believing that my husband was counting down the days until we could be reunited.
Meanwhile, he was living a completely different life.
I glanced towards the baggage area and saw Gerald approaching with the diaper bag.
Suddenly, I thought that maybe someone would finally stand up for me.
« Actually, Ryan, I understand something now, » I said quietly.
He seemed relieved.
» GOOD. «
« But before we continue, look to your right. »
Father Ryan’s reaction
reversed.
His confidence has vanished.
» Dad ? «
Gerald stopped in front of us, his expression stern.
« What the hell were you thinking? » he demanded.
Ryan lowered his eyes.
For a brief moment, I felt justified.
Then Gerald continued.
« You bring another woman into public, right in front of your wife? And then you confess everything? »
I frowned.
» What ? «
Gerald shook his head.
« I’ve been married for thirty-four years. Your mother never found out anything about the women I met, because I was sensible enough to keep my private life private. »
The world seemed to waver beneath my feet.
« You’re not upset that he cheated on his wife, » I whispered. « You’re upset that he got caught. »
Gerald seemed irritated.
« Claire, there’s no reason to raise your voice. »
Ryan nodded towards his father.
« You’re right, Dad. I handled the situation badly. »
Then he turned towards me.
« Sorry, baby. Can we move on? »
He reached out towards Mia’s stroller.
I moved her away.
« Don’t do that. »
His expression hardened.
« Are you seriously going to stop me from seeing my daughters because you’re angry? »
« I’m not pretending this is normal, » I replied. « I’m going home. »
Gerald placed a firm hand on my shoulder.
« Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t manage the return trip alone with two babies, and I won’t allow you to make an emotional decision concerning my granddaughters. »
The most painful thing was knowing that, financially, he wasn’t wrong.
I had spent almost everything on the trip. I was on unpaid maternity leave, and Ryan’s income was paying most of our bills.
I had no clear way to leave immediately.
So I went back with them.
But something inside me had changed.
During the flight, Ryan and Gerald chatted quietly about an upcoming fishing trip.
Neither of them mentioned what had happened at the terminal.
I looked at my sleeping daughters beside me and realized that these two men expected me to forget everything.
Upon our arrival, Ryan dropped his suitcase near the front door.
« What’s for dinner? » he asked.
I turned towards him.
« Are you serious? »
He shrugged.
« We were happy for years, Claire. You have nowhere else to go. Why destroy everything for something that meant nothing? »
I didn’t reply.
The first real choice
The next morning, I called my best friend, Dana.
“I don’t know what to do,” I confessed, sitting between the twins’ cribs. “I could go back to work, but looking after two babies would cost a fortune. And then there’s the rent, the groceries, everything else.”
« You can stay at my place, » she said immediately.
« Dana, your apartment is tiny. »
« So we’ll make sure it works. »
I watched Ava and Mia.
I desperately wanted to accept, but I was afraid of trading one unstable situation for another.
Perhaps I could wait until Ryan went back to sea.
I could go back to work, save some money and eventually leave with a real plan.
That evening, I found Ryan standing in the children’s room, with Ava leaning against his chest.
He was humming softly.
Our daughter had curled her little fingers around her thumb.
For a moment, I remembered the man I had fallen in love with.
Perhaps he could still be a wonderful father, even if he had failed as a husband.
Perhaps I could tolerate an imperfect marriage so that our daughters would have financial security.
Then came bedtime.
I had put an extra blanket on the living room sofa.
Ryan noticed her immediately.
« I don’t sleep in there. »
« I can’t pretend nothing happened, » I told him.
He climbed into our bed.
« You can’t keep treating me like a criminal for something that’s over. »
« Ryan, you betrayed me. »
He gave a bitter laugh.
« If you treat me as if I were single, don’t be surprised if I end up acting like one. »
I grabbed my pillow and went to the children’s room.
I spent the night lying on the floor between my daughters’ cribs.
In the morning, I had made my first real decision.
I went back to work.
Dana helped me contact a childcare facility that might have places for both girls.
My manager agreed to meet with me to discuss my return.
He offered me three morning shifts per week or longer evening hours.
I’ve scheduled an appointment for Thursday.
Ryan promised to stay home with the twins while I went.
For the first time since high school, I allowed myself a little hope.
Then Ryan came down one morning with a huge smile.
« Good news! Holloway has approved my transfer to a shore-based position. »
I fixed it.
» What ? «
« No more months at sea. I will work here, locally, from now on. »
Mr. Holloway was his department head, the person responsible for recommending the transfer.
A few months earlier, I would have celebrated.
Now, the announcement made my stomach churn.
I was counting on Ryan’s future absence to rebuild my independence.
Instead, he would be home every day.
« I invited Holloway over on Friday night, » Ryan added. « It’s important to make a good impression. Prepare a proper dinner. »
I forced myself to nod.
