PART 2
The next morning, Daniel called eighteen times.
I answered none of them.
By noon, Evelyn left me seven voicemails, each one sharper than the last.
By three o’clock, her $10,000 allowance vanished from every linked account.
That was when panic finally replaced pride.
At 4:17 p.m., Daniel stormed into my attorney’s office wearing the same expensive watch I had bought him for our anniversary.
His mother followed in pearls, sunglasses, and outrage.
“You humiliated this family,” she snapped the moment she saw me.
I sat across the conference table with an ice pack resting against my bruised cheek.
“No, Evelyn. I documented this family.”
Daniel threw a folder onto the table.
“This divorce will be simple. You leave with what you came with.”
My attorney, Mr. Hale, adjusted his glasses.
“That would be generous, considering Mr. Brooks entered the marriage with less than thirty thousand dollars and substantial business debt.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
Evelyn laughed.
“My son owns Brooks Capital.”
Mr. Hale slid a stack of papers forward.
“Brooks Capital survived because Mrs. Carter transferred emergency funds through three private accounts over twenty-six months.”
Daniel stared at the documents.
Then came the bank records.
Then the allowance trails.
Then the property deed.
When Daniel saw the mansion listed under my holding company, the color drained from his face.
“You bought the house?”
“I bought the house before our wedding.”
Evelyn’s mouth opened, but nothing came out.
For once, silence fit her perfectly.
Then Mr. Hale placed one final envelope on the table.
“The security footage from yesterday’s assault has already been preserved.”
Daniel looked at me then, not as a wife, not even as a woman he had hurt, but as someone he had finally realized he could lose everything to.
“Emily,” he whispered. “I made a mistake.”
I touched the bruise on my cheek.
“No. You made a choice.”
Before he could answer, my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
DON’T TRUST YOUR LAWYER.
Attached was a photo of Mr. Hale shaking hands with Evelyn outside my mansion two weeks earlier.
