My husband forced me to serve his mistress at his graduation party, until his boss recognized the billionaire woman whose existence he was unaware of.

The architect in the shadows

Part 1: The Woman Behind the Apron

The office was plunged into darkness, save for the soft blue glow of three screens. On the central screen, a banner of stocks scrolled by at high speed, but Elena was only following one: NVS. NovaStream. Up twelve percent after the close.

She leaned back in her ergonomic chair and massaged her temples. At thirty-two, she was the founder and silent majority shareholder of NovaStream, the cloud computing giant that had quietly revolutionized data storage. Her fortune fluctuated with the market, but remained around three billion dollars.

Tonight, NovaStream acquired its main competitor in Asia. They should have been celebrating.

Instead, a BMW roared into the driveway.

Elena abruptly closed her laptop, slid it into the compartment hidden under her desk, and rushed into the kitchen. She took a casserole dish out of the oven, put on an apron, and tousled her hair until she looked sufficiently disheveled.

The front door opened. Mark entered.

He was as handsome as a catalogue model, with a hero’s jaw and a dictator’s ego. His keys clattered loudly on the bowl.

« I’m home, » he announced without waiting for a reply. He walked past her without stopping, went to the refrigerator, and grabbed a beer.

« Hi darling, » said Elena, wiping her hands on her apron. « How was your day? »

Mark exhaled a long, theatrical sigh meant to elicit sympathy. « It’s terrible. The board is putting enormous pressure on marketing. They have no vision, Elena. They only care about the numbers. But I handled it. As always. »

Elena nodded and suppressed the urge to correct him. She knew exactly what the board wanted, since she  was  a member. She was the one who had sent the email that very morning, demanding a better return on investment for the new advertising campaign, the one Mark was supposed to be leading.

« I’m sure you were wonderful, » she said softly.

Mark took a long sip and glanced into the kitchen. « Is dinner ready? It’s a bit… messy. » He gestured toward a pile of mail on the counter.

“I was just finishing the laundry,” Elena lied. In reality, she had spent the last hour on a secure video conference with the Prime Minister of Singapore. “The dish is simmering for another five minutes.”

Mark chuckled. « I ran into Dave from sales today. His wife’s a lawyer. A partner in his firm. Six-figure salary. » He gave him a look that was a mixture of pity and disdain. « It must be nice to… just exist. To have no pressure. »

The hurt was familiar. It wasn’t the insult itself; she was more insensitive to that. It was the irony.

Five years ago, Mark was unemployed, depressed, and consumed by despair. Elena, already a millionaire thanks to her early patents, succumbed to his vulnerability. To support him, she invented a story: she was a struggling freelance graphic designer, and he was a rising star. She used her connections to land him an entry-level position at one of her subsidiaries. Then, she secretly managed his career, feeding him ideas, correcting his mistakes late into the night, and orchestrating each of his promotions.

She had dimmed her own light so that he could shine. Now, blinded by this borrowed glow, he could no longer see her at all.

« I’m doing my best, Mark, » she said in a choked voice.

« I know, darling. » He stroked her head like a pet. « Just try to look more presentable tomorrow. The promotion party is important. The CEO might be there. I don’t want you looking like… well, like that. » He gestured toward the apron.

Elena smiled. It was a cold, sharp smile, and Mark didn’t notice it at all because his eyes were already glued to his phone.

« Don’t worry, » she said. « I’ll make sure everyone knows exactly who I am tomorrow. »

Later that night, while Mark was snoring next to her, a phone lit up on the nightstand. It was his, and he had forgotten to put it on silent.

Message from  Jessica – Work  :  I can’t wait to be your queen tomorrow night. Your wife, that idiot, won’t suspect a thing. Wear the blue tie I bought you.

Elena stared at the screen. She didn’t cry. She bent down under the bed and pulled out a velvet box. Inside was a platinum signet ring engraved with the NovaStream crest.

« You wanted a queen, Mark, » she whispered to the sleeping man. « Be careful what you wish for. »

The following evening, the Ritz-Carlton’s grand ballroom shimmered with gold and purple lights. It was a party fit for royalty, financed by a « generous anonymous donor » from headquarters.

Mark arrived in a limousine, looking sharp in the blue tie Jessica had given him. On his arm was Jessica herself, wearing a red dress that would have been illegal in three states. She worked in human resources, a department Elena had personally asked to hire more « creative people. » Apparently, Jessica’s creativity lay elsewhere.

Elena arrived ten minutes later, in an Uber. Mark had insisted. « It’s better if we arrive separately, » he had said. « I need to do some networking early. »

She entered discreetly dressed in a simple black dress, elegant and understated, and stood near a marble column, watching her husband walk around the room.

« Ladies and gentlemen! » Mark exclaimed in a booming voice, raising a flute of champagne near the ice sculpture. « They say that behind every great man there is a great woman. And I couldn’t agree more. »

He pulled Jessica close to him. The crowd, mistaking her for his wife, applauded politely.

« Jessica has always been my rock, » Mark lied effortlessly. « Her intelligence, her class… that’s what motivates me. »

A young executive leaned forward. « Is that your wife, Mark? »

Mark let out a cruel, shrill laugh. « No, no. This is Jessica, my right-hand woman. My wife is around here. » His gaze flicked to Elena, huddled in the shadows. « Probably near the buffet. She loves free food. »

Jessica giggled and whispered in his ear.

Elena’s heart was ice. Then she saw him.

A white gold pendant set with a blue diamond adorned Jessica’s neck. Its design was instantly recognizable: the North Star, commissioned by Elena’s grandfather for her grandmother. This piece of jewelry had been missing from Elena’s jewelry box for two weeks. Mark had told her he’d taken it to have the clasp repaired.

He hadn’t just cheated on her. He had stolen his family’s inheritance to adorn his mistress.

The last shred of pity she felt for him evaporated.

Elena took out her phone. It was exactly 8:00 PM. She opened an encrypted application and sent a message to Arthur Sterling, the CEO of NovaStream’s holding company.

Execute the Omega plan. It’s your turn.

The lights flickered. The hushed jazz stopped, replaced by a dull and unsettling hum of feedback.

« What’s going on? » Mark whispered. « Are we experiencing a power outage? »

A voice boomed from the loudspeakers, almost divine in its power. « The new marketing director is requested to come forward to receive a special decision from the chairman of the board. »

Mark’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. « That’s it! » he whispered to Jessica. « The president’s finally noticing me. Maybe a bonus. Maybe stock! » He took her hand. « Come on. Let’s make history. »

They walked towards the stage, beaming, unaware that the giant LED screen behind the podium, the one displaying the company logo, was starting to malfunction. The logo faded pixel by pixel, revealing something else entirely.

Part Two: The President Rises

As Mark and Jessica walked up the stairs, the heavy double doors at the far end of the ballroom opened.

Six men and women in dark suits entered, moving with the synchronized precision of a pack of predators. At the center of them stood Arthur Sterling, the public face of NovaStream: a 6’4″ man with silver hair, known for devouring his competitors.

Mark froze at the top of the stairs. « Mr. Sterling! » he shouted, waving his arms frantically. « This way! »

Sterling didn’t even glance at the stage. With his entourage, he pushed his way through the crowd, and the human tide parted before them. They headed towards the back of the hall, towards the shadows.

Mark frowned. « He can’t see me. The light is blinding him. »

« Mark, » Jessica hissed, tugging at her sleeve. « Look at the screen. »

« Not now. I need Sterling’s attention. »

« Mark!  Look!  «

He turned around. The giant screen wasn’t displaying his sales figures. It was broadcasting live images from a security camera installed in an office.

His office.

The recorded video began to play. Mark was sitting at his desk, feet elevated, phone pressed to his ear.

« Yeah, put that on the company map, » Mark said nonchalantly to the screen. « Category: Client Entertainment. Who cares? The listeners are idiots. My wife? Pfft! She thinks I’m working overtime. She’s so naive, it’s pathetic. I could tell her the sky is green and she’d start painting the ceiling. »

A deathly silence fell over the ballroom. Three hundred faces turned towards the stage.

Mark’s skin turned as white as paper. « It’s… it’s a deepfake! It’s AI! I’m being sabotaged! » He pointed at the crowd, desperately searching for an ally. « Mr. Sterling! This has to stop! Security! »

Sterling finally stopped. He was standing a meter away from the woman in the black dress.

Mark blinked. Why was the most powerful man in the building standing in front of his rather unattractive wife?

« Hey! » he shouted at Elena. « You! Move aside! You’re blocking Mr. Sterling’s way! Go get him a drink or something! »

Jessica snatched the microphone from the podium. « Security! Please remove this woman in the black dress! She’s ruining everything! »

Elena didn’t move. She didn’t flinch. Slowly, she raised her hand and removed the clip from her hair, letting it fall in a dark wave over her shoulders. She straightened up and seemed to grow a few centimeters taller. The hunched, contrite posture of the « housewife » vanished, replaced by the steely stance of a titan.

She looked at Mark. She looked at Jessica. And finally, she looked at Sterling.

Sterling adjusted his tie. Then, to the stunned amazement of the three hundred people present, he bowed. Not a nod, but a deep, ninety-degree curtsy, a sign of absolute deference.

« Madam President, » he said, his voice echoing through the stunned room. « We await your orders. »

The microphone slipped from Jessica’s fingers and hit the stage with a loud, deafening thud.

« Mr. President… Mr. President? » Mark stammered, his brain functioning like a dying engine. « Who are you talking to? »

Sterling turned slowly towards him. « I am speaking to the owner of this business. The owner of this hotel. And the owner of the very stage you are standing on. »

He reached out his hand towards Elena.

« Ms. Elena Vance. »
